Exceptional Chronometry from Leroy

Exceptional Chronometry from Leroy

It is common knowledge that the primary allure of a luxury timepiece is not its ability to tell time, but rather the amazing technical innovation, complexity, beautiful design, materials, and often the prowess of the watchmaker as well. However, chronometry – the science of the measurement of time and timekeeping – is a necessary aspect to timepieces of all kinds.

Leroy is one of the oldest watch crafting houses in the world, founded in 1785. Over nearly 230 years, this house of horology has produced some of the most luxury timepieces ever created. Each watch from the house of Leroy is developed with exceptional chronometry, remarkable mechanical and technical innovations, and dazzling design.

And the chronometry undergoes extensive testing before receiving certification. Leroy submits all of their chronometers to the French institution accredited to test and certify chronometers, the Observatoire National de Besançon. Once there, the timepieces are tested for 16 consecutive days in five different positions and under temperatures between 8°C and 38°C.

“The battery of tests to which the watches are subjected day after day comply with the ISO 3159 international standard which tolerates only the tiniest of variations … Once these criteria are satisfied, each Leroy chronometer is hallmarked with the famous Viper’s Head and receives its individual numbered certificate, issued to the owner of the watch,” Leroy’s website notes.

The watchmaker’s dedication to chronological excellence with its timepieces has not gone unnoticed. It is one of the reasons why this house of watchmaking has lasted for more than 200 years – longer than most of the other names in luxury watchmaking today.
