The Milus 18k Rose Gold Herios TriRetrograde watch utilizes a self-winding mechanical movement with three alternating retrograde seconds indicators, each indicator responsible for 20 seconds.
This is a very fun and dynamic complication. The first retrograde second hand starts from 1 and moves to the 4 o’clock position for the first 20 seconds. Then as it instantaneously jumps back, the second range on the bottom goes from 5 to 7 o’clock for the next 20 seconds; and finally, the third range goes from 8 to 11, completing the whole minute.
While most mechanical complications (e.g. perpetual calendars, equations of time, repeaters) are more or less stationary, this piece is fun to look at. The movements of the retrograde second hands are mesmerizing.
No expense was spared in making this watch: The dial is a multilayered cut-away dial, featuring blued screws, blued hands, and ruby bearings. The finishing on the edges of the inner dial are mirror-like, giving a stunning reflection at different light angles. It takes an experienced artisan many hours to craft a dial of this level of detail.
Also, make sure to take a moment to look at the thick and curved sapphire crystal. The purpose of using curved (rather than flat) sapphire crystal is to create a profile consistent with the case. The execution, though very costly, is beautiful.
Milus was founded in Bienne, Switzerland and is a phenomenal small production watchmaker, combining unique complication with traditional craftsmanship. As the company’s CEO once said, “To some people, luxury means possessing an extravagant item, but luxury can also be much more. As Milus sees it, luxury is highly personal. It is the luxury of being oneself. Be yourself, with Milus.”
